Lower Slaughter: A Dream Setting for Family Photography
There’s something truly special about preparing for a photoshoot, especially when it’s for a family travelling all the way from the United States to experience the English countryside. My recent location scout in Lower Slaughter reminded me exactly why this village is one of the most magical spots for family photography in the Cotswolds.
Why Lower Slaughter is Perfect for Family Photoshoots
Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, Lower Slaughter feels like stepping into a storybook. With its honey-coloured stone cottages, gently flowing river, and peaceful footpaths, it offers a timeless backdrop that’s ideal for capturing natural, relaxed family moments.
From a photographer’s perspective, it has everything you could want:

- Quiet, open spaces for children to explore freely

Scouting the Best Spots
I took my mum along for my visit for a bit of moral support and explored a variety of locations to ensure we have the perfect flow for the session. From Lower Slaughter, you can walk to it's neighbouring pretty village, Upper Slaughter. It is around a 15 minute walk across beautiful fields and countryside. With a coffee in hand (highly recommend The Old Mill), sunglasses on and my camera ready to go, we took a slow paced walk to Upper Slaughter. Just as beautiful as it's sister (or brother!?) but very little going on.
The only way to end a good location scout would be to visit The Slaughters Country Inn for a bit of grub and some bubbly from 'The Field Kitchen'
For this upcoming shoot, I’ll be travelling very early to avoid any crowds, ensuring there is little distraction and we capture those fleeting, magical moments in the most flattering way possible.
