Newborn Photoshoot Hints & Tips
Firstly, Congratulations! Welcoming your new baby home is one of life’s most magical moments. Thank you for inviting me into this beautiful bubble and chapter of your story and allowing me to capture your family in such an intimate and meaningful way.
5 Tips for a Happy Newborn or Family Photshoot
Let's get started..
Prepare your home
Before your session, take a moment to consider where you would love your photographs to be taken. I work exclusively with natural light, so rooms with large windows and soft, flattering daylight are ideal.
Please don’t feel any pressure to deep clean your home — I completely understand that your time and energy are devoted to your new little one. A simple tidy of visible surfaces is all that’s needed. Removing everyday distractions such as feeding pillows, laundry, or miscellaneous items from the background will ensure your images feel calm, timeless, and beautifully curated.
Soft blankets, muslins, and textured throws photograph wonderfully and can add depth and warmth to your images. They are also perfect for capturing elegant, swaddled portraits of your newborn, so do keep them close by if you have them.
Choosing the perfect time
If older siblings are joining us, thoughtful timing can make all the difference. Planning the session after naps and with full tummies will help everyone feel relaxed and content, allowing for a smoother, more enjoyable experience.
Dress for success
I provide a carefully curated styling guide to support you in selecting outfits for your session. Wardrobe choices have a significant impact on the overall aesthetic of your images. Soft, neutral tones and beautifully coordinated pieces photograph effortlessly and create a refined, cohesive look that will stand the test of time.
Be flexible
While it’s lovely to have inspiration and ideas, the most beautiful images often unfold naturally. Babies and young children move to their own rhythm, and that is perfectly as it should be.
I will gently guide you throughout the session, allowing space for feeding, cuddles, and quiet moments as needed. My approach is calm, patient, and baby-led, ensuring an experience that feels relaxed, seamless, and entirely centred around your family.
Fill their bellies
For newborn sessions, feeding baby shortly before the photoshoot can help them feel sleepy and content. A full tummy usually means a calmer baby and more relaxed moments to photograph, the same applies for other toddlers and children! This will help prevent them from getting hangry during the session.
Keep the morning calm
Try to keep the schedule relaxed before the session. Avoid rushing if possible and allow time for feeding, naps, or getting ready. A calm start helps everyone—especially babies and children—feel more settled during the shoot. Babies, toddlers and children will vibe off you so bare this in mind. Don't expect too much from them, the more we push the less likely they will want to join in. Make it fun, set mini missions and let them just be. Happy babies, happy parents, happy session.
Let Kids Be Kids
Children don’t need to sit perfectly still. Some of the best moments happen when kids are playing, cuddling, or interacting naturally with parents and siblings. Relaxed, natural moments often create the most meaningful photos.
Trust the Process
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. Photographers typically use areas with the best natural light—like near windows—and focus on genuine connections rather than perfection. Relax, enjoy the experience, and focus on spending time together as a family.
